- Guv. Herbert declares a new state of emergency due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic regardless the legislators’ opposition. He reissued a series of seven executive orders to replace some earlier orders that expired at Thursday midnight: 1) temporarily suspending in-person access to Utah Board of Pardons and Parole hearings, 2) suspending provisions of the Utah Postretirement Reemployment Restrictions Act; 3) ordering suspension of enforcement of certain retail licensees that closed or ceased operation on or after March 15; 4) suspending enforcement of statutes relating to telehealth services; 5) updating requiring the wearing of masks in all state-run buildings. It allows face coverings or face shields; 6) adopting version 4.10 of the coronavirus phased guidelines and declaring restriction levels; 7) A separate order requiring masks in schools will continue. https://saltlaketribune-ut.newsmemory.com/
- U. Health to start using saliva tests for COVID-19 by mid-September. Clinical researchers at the University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories has completed a study that found the spit test detected the virus as well as the traditional, and famously uncomfortable, nasal swab. “In over a thousand samples, we were able to show with pretty robust confidence in our statistics, we think, that saliva looks to be just as effective as the standard deep swab … It’s easier to collect, and it’s probably safer for the health care providers as well,” Dr. Kimberly Hanson, infectious disease physician at U. Health and section chief of clinical microbiology at ARUP said. https://saltlaketribune-ut.newsmemory.com/
