  3. From May 1 to May 29 Utah’s total Covid-19 cases increased 91% from 4828 to 9264; hospitalized patients increased 87% (403 to 753), deaths increased 132% (46 to 107). Three counties having higher than the state averages,are Salt Lake County (Growth in cases 97%, hospitalizations 88%, deaths 145%), Utah County (84%, 112%, 143%) and San Juan County (508%, 328%, 150%).

  5. Saliva Testing Study-Starting today, people tested for COVID-19 at Redwood Health Center may participate in a study evaluating whether saliva can be used to reliably test for COVID-19. ARUP hopes to enroll about 1,000 people in the study which aims to identify less invasive test methods. More details will be announced publicly on Monday.
  6. Most K-12 schools and colleges in Utah are expected to welcome back students this fall, according to new guidance released on May 27 by the governor. The guidance for K-12 education addresses the resumption of school activities, including sports, under jurisdiction of district and school authorities in adherence to indoor and outdoor guidelines. Additionally, hand sanitizer will need to be made available to faculty and students in each classroom and regular hand washing routines will be instituted. Faculty and staff will need to wear face coverings when social distancing is not possible. Updates regarding face coverings for students will be provided by local school and charter boards in consultation with health department officials.  Regarding higher education, campuses may be open for in-person classes with increased cleaning and hygiene regimen. In cooperation with the Utah System of Higher Education, each institution will develop individualized plans for repopulating campus, monitoring for incidence, containing outbreaks, and reclosing if necessary.
